Did you know that June is National Safety Month? This year, the NSC Program is observing the 25th anniversary of National Safety Month. The U.S. has seen an incline in workplace and non workplace injuries, so it's important to take steps to keep yourself safe.

Below are the weekly topics that the NSC are going to focus on each week:

Week 1 - Prevent Incidents Before They Start: Identifying risks and taking proactive safety measures to reduce hazard exposure on important topics from ergonomics to chemical management is crucial to creating a safe workplace.

Week 2 - Address Ongoing COVID-19 Safety Concerns: As the pandemic continues, employers play an important role in expanding operations and returning remote workers to physical workspaces.

Week 3 - It’s Vital to Feel Safe on the Job: Being able to be one’s self at work without fear of retaliation is necessary for an inclusive safety culture. Leading organizations focus not only on physical safety, but psychological safety as well.

Week 4 - Advance Your Safety Journey: Safety is all about continuous improvement. Whether organizationally or individually, NSC can help provide guidance for your path forward.

Fire Prevention Week 2020

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Prevention Week 2020 is October 4th-10th.

This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is "Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen. " Did you know cooking is the number one cause of home fires?

How to Prevent Kitchen Fires

You can do a lot to prevent kitchen fires. Although you can’t remove every possible source of a kitchen fire, you can minimize fire risks by removing hazards and maintaining your kitchen. Follow these prevention tips to keep your kitchen safe:

  • Keep appliances serviced, clean, and in good repair. Dump the crumb tray and clean out the toaster crumbs periodically from the toaster or toaster oven. Wipe out the microwave. Clean the oven. Unplug any appliances that start acting funny, then have them repaired or replace them.

  • Unplug electric appliances when not in use. Toaster ovens, mixers, coffee makers, and so on, continue to draw electricity even when they’re not turned on. So if the wiring is old or faulty, or if the thermostat overheats, a fire could break out.

  • Install a smoke detector near, but not in the kitchen. You don’t want the small amount of smoke or steam that cooking sometimes generates to constantly trigger the alarm — but you do want it to sense an actual kitchen fire.

  • Use caution when lighting the pilot light or burner on a gas stove. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions

  • Don’t use metal in the microwave. The sparks can turn into fire or can seriously damage your microwave.

  • Don’t overfill pots or pans with oil or grease. The hot oil or grease, like in this figure, can splatter and cause a fire.

  • Wipe up spills and don’t cook on a dirty stove. Grease buildup is flammable. A clean stove is a fire-free stove.

  • Always roll up long sleeves and tie back long hair when cooking.

  • Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen, especially if you’re cooking in grease or if the oven is at a very high heat. Turn off the burner or oven if you need to leave the house or get caught up in a phone call.

  • Keep dish towels, pot holders, and paper towels away from the stove. You might have left a burner on by accident, and built-up heat could ignite combustibles left near or on the stove or oven.

Create your Emergency Plan with SERVPRO

8/12/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO logo with "Emergency Ready Profile" text under it Take advantage of the free SERVPRO ERP.

As many as 50% of businesses close down following a disaster, according to the latest research. Of the businesses that survive, the overwhelming majority of them had a preparedness plan in place. Pre-planning can serve as an insurance policy aimed at peace of mind. And knowing you are "Ready for whatever happens" speaks trust to your clients and employees that in the event your business is affected by a disaster, they don’t necessarily have to be.

Since beginning work on local emergency profiles, our franchise has completed close to 100 ERP's at local schools, hospitals, libraries, county buildings, theaters, hotels, restaurants, small businesses, warehouses, apartment buildings, college campuses, senior living centers and more. We want to assist you in creating your free emergency plan to keep you, your building and those in it safe. Call us to learn more or schedule your free ERP - 570-714-0090.

By developing a SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile for your business, you minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action. Knowing what to do and what to expect in advance is the key to timely mitigation and can help minimize how water and fire damage can affect your business.

  • A no cost assessment of your facility.
This means there is no need to allocate funds, giving you a great value at no cost.

  • A concise Profile Document that contains only the critical information needed in the event of an emergency.
It will only take a little time to complete and will not take you away from current projects. But it will save a lot of time if ever needed.

  • A guide to help you get back into your building following a disaster.
This can help minimize the amount of time your business is inactive by having an immediate plan of action.

  • Establishes your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional as your disaster mitigation and restoration provider.
You have a provider that is recognized as an industry leader and close by.

  • Identification of the line of command for authorizing work to begin.
This saves time so we can begin the work of mitigating the damage which can save you time and money.

  • Provides facility details such as shut-off valve locations, priority areas and priority contact information.
Having a quick reference of what to do, how to do it and who to call provides solutions in advance of an emergency so that during the emergency you are "Ready for whatever happens."

June is National Safety Month 2020

6/1/2020 (Permalink)

June as “National Safety Month” to bring awareness to the importance of safety. Here are a few tips to avoid workplace accidents and injuries.

Practice Effective Tool Safety

Tools are an essential part of completing tasks while on the job site. However, tools can present a workplace injury hazard. Power tools present hazards when considering the source of their power (gas, electric, etc.) and the force at which they operate (like jack hammers or saws). But basic hand tools like wrenches, hammers, pliers, screwdrivers, and others can present dangers of injury as well. Here are some key points to keep in mind to help prevent an injury from a hand tool or power tool:

Hand Tools

  • Inspect the tool before use – do not use a tool with a loose or cracked handle.
  • Use the right tool for the job – do not use a tool for anything other than it’s intended purpose.
  • Operate tools according to the manufacturers’ instructions.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety goggles and gloves.
  • Perform regular maintenance on tools.
  • Keep the floor surface clear of any debris or tripping hazards.

Power Tools

  • Disconnect tools when not in use.
  • Avoid using power tools in wet locations; if unavoidable, ensure that adequate Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) Protection is installed and properly functioning.
  • Use a cord with a three-pronged plug and grounding pin, or double-insulated tools with intact insulating housings.
  • Ensure cords are not a tripping hazard.
  • For gasoline or diesel powered equipment, shut down the engine and let it cool before refueling.
  • Use guards for moving parts of power tools – this helps protect the operator and others from rotating parts such as a saw blade.

Preventing Slip and Fall Injuries/Accidents

Slip and fall injuries are types of losses that can present a significant cost to your business. With some careful planning, you can help reduce the potential of slips, trips and falls in your small business location.

Remember to:

  • Keep the floor clear of fallen objects
  • Clean up or report any spills
  • Check your pathway for any obstructions — drawers, supplies, trash cans, power cords, etc.
  • Keep an eye out for uneven floors or changes in floor level
  • Use proper footwear
  • Use handrails when ascending or descending stairs
  • Watch out for loose, torn or worn flooring
  • Report poorly-lit areas or burned out bulbs/non-functioning lighting

Driving/Vehicle Safety

Here are some examples of safe driving practices:

  • Verify driver’s Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) records yearly to ensure licenses are valid and to discover any violations (e.g., speeding tickets)
  • Permit only trained and properly licensed people to drive specialized vehicles.
  • Check tires, lights, horn, and brakes of company vehicles before driving; repair or replace as needed.
  • Wear safety belts to prevent being ejected in event of accident.
  • Rest as needed – a drowsy driver can be very dangerous.
  • Be aware of the distribution of the cargo weight (shifting loads may cause loss of control).
  • Follow vehicle owner’s manual for braking techniques (e.g., many manufacturers advise against pumping anti-lock brakes).
  • Do not exceed maximum speed limit.
  • Count the number of seconds it takes to reach a fixed object which the vehicle in front passed, and then keep at least two seconds of distance behind that vehicle if the road and weather are favorable; maintain more time if they are not.
  • Check blind spots before changing lanes; look over your shoulder or use mirrors if you do not have a rear window or if the load blocks the view from a rear window.
  • Stay out of other vehicles’ blind spots.
  • Pull over to side of road when making or receiving a phone call, texting, or using any electronic device.

Electrical Safety

Working with (or around) electricity poses a serious injury risk in the workplace. Here are some potential electricity risks and how to help minimize or eliminate them.

Tools and Equipment
As mentioned previously in this article, tools present a risk due to their power and the fact that normal use of electrical equipment causes wear and tear that can result in improper function of the tool/device, short-circuits, or exposed wires. By remembering safe practices such as, but not limited to, disconnecting tools when you’ve finishing using them, not operating tools in wet conditions, and using guards and protective equipment, you can help maintain a safe level of power tool and equipment use.

Power Lines
Power lines can carry extremely high voltage. Not only do they pose an electrocution risk, but also a risk burns. Power lines can be either overhead or buried under ground, which is an additional risk when excavating.

  • Check first for overhead power lines before starting any work; call your area’s underground utility locator to ensure there are no buried underground lines before beginning any excavation work.
  • Have the utility owner’s authorized representatives de-energize and ground lines when conducting work near them.
  • Perform job duties around power lines with the assumption that they are energized.

Extension Cords
Extension cords are a necessary device for any job site; however, cords pose a hazard when they are worn, have exposed wires, or a loose connection on the plug-in end. These conditions can increase the hazard of electric shock.

  • Use extension cords that are 3-wire type to ensure proper grounding.
  • Do not modify or attempt to repair extension cords.
  • Use cords and connection devices with strain relief.
  • To remove cords from receptacles, pull them on the plugs – not the cords.

Additional Electrical Safety Tips

  • Electrical equipment, electrical circuits, and power supply systems should be grounded.
  • Inspect electrical systems to ensure that the path to ground is continuous. Utilize a small, inexpensive plug-in socket tester to ensure circuits are properly wired and grounded. Test GFCI- equipped circuits using the test button on the unit.
  • Use double-insulated tools and ensure that any metal-framed tool has proper grounding cord and plug

Office Safety

While an office may be quieter and neater than a plant or jobsite, it can still contain machinery, chemical, slip and fall, and fire hazards. Here are some hazards found in most office settings along with ways to help eliminate or minimize their risks.

Machines (copier, shredder, fax, printer)
Only employees trained to use these machines should be operating them. Remind users to keep body, hair, clothing, and jewelry away from moving and/or hot parts. The machines should be plugged in to properly grounded outlets, and defective or damaged power cords should be replaced. Only qualified technicians should service or repair machines.

Slip and fall risks
Keep power cords out of walkways. Furniture, storage, and equipment should not be blocking aisles or walkways. Clean spills immediately using non-slip floor cleaners and waxes. During inclement weather, place walk-off floor mats at doorways to help reduce the buildup of slippery conditions on floors. Adequate light should be provided in all areas where employees walk, and handrails should be in place for stairs.

Fire hazards
Smoking should only be allowed in designated areas with adequate ashtrays. Portable heaters should be discouraged in the office, or if permitted, they must be kept clear from combustibles. Employees should avoid overloading electric circuits.

Halloween Safety Tips

Ghost Halloween Costume with text that says "Stay Safe. Halloween Safety Tips" Have a safe & happy Halloween!

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Walk Safely

  1. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
  2. Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
  3. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
  4. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to
  5. the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
  6. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
  7. Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, tell them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

Costumes for a Safe Halloween

  1. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
  2. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
  3. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  4. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Drive Extra Safely on Halloween

  1. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
  2. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
  3. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
  4. Get rid of any distractions - like your phone - in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
  5. Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.
  6. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Be especially alert for kids during those hours.

Happy Halloween!

Fire Prevention Week 2019

10/2/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Prevention Week 2019 is October 6th - October 12th. This year’s FPW campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Did you know?
In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.

Plan ahead for your escape. Use this link from NFPA to Make your home escape plan and practice today.

In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.

About Fire Prevention Week

Since 1922, the NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.

Back to School Safety Month

8/19/2019 (Permalink)

DID YOU KNOW?

August is back to school safety month. The greatest risk to a child isn’t riding a bus, but approaching or leaving one.

Drivers:STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES

You may need to add more time to your commute, because when buses stop to pick up students, other drivers need to stop, too.

  • Yellow flashing lights mean slow down — don’t speed up — because the bus is preparing to stop. There are likely students waiting to get on the bus or parents waiting nearby to pick up children.
  • Red flashing lights mean stop — and wait at least 20 feet behind the bus — because children are getting on or off the school bus. Stay stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving.
  • Even when lights aren’t flashing, watch for children, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone or bus stop.

Parents:TALK BUS SAFETY WITH YOUR CHILDREN

School buses are the safest way for children to travel to and from school. Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Teach them to play it SAFE:

  • Stay five steps away from the curb.
  • Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver tells you to board.
  • Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
  • Exit the bus when it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.

 Walkers:WATCH THE ROAD

Walking to school is great exercise, but children under 10 years old should be accompanied by an adult or with someone who will make sure they walk safely. If you’re walking:

  • Use the sidewalk whenever possible, and if there isn’t a sidewalk, walk on the edge of the street facing traffic.
  • Whenever they are available, use marked crosswalks to cross the street, and look left-right-left for vehicles or bikes before crossing.
  • Make sure you never play, push or shove others when you walk around traffic.
  • Everyone should watch the road, not their phones.

Bikers:KNOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD

Riding your bike can be a fun and quick way to get to school. Be sure to do these simple things to keep your bike ride safe:

  • Always wear a correctly fitted helmet, and securely fasten the chin strap.
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic, and follow traffic signs and signals.
  • Stay in the bike lane whenever possible.
  • Never use electronics while riding – they are distracting.

 Student drivers:FOCUS ON THE ROAD

For some teens, back to school also means the new-found freedom of driving. You should keep these things in mind when driving to school:

  • The car shouldn’t move until everyone is buckled up.
  • Follow the speed limit.
  • Stay focused.
    • Remember that the phone stays down when you’re driving. Make it a habit to put your phone in the glove compartment or other inaccessible location, to reduce temptation to check notifications or texts.
    • Reduce distraction by limiting the number of additional passengers. If you do have others in the car with you, keep your eyes and your mind on the road.

Let this school year be a safe one for everyone. Stay alert, whether you’re a driver, walker, bicyclist, bus rider, or parent.

Stay Safe During National Grilling Month

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

Grill Safely this Summer!

July is National Grilling Month. Grill Safely this Summer with some helpful tips and information below!

Seven out of every 10 adults in the U.S. have a grill or smoker, which translates to a lot of tasty meals. But it also means there’s an increased risk of home fires.

In 2013-2017, fire departments went to an annual average of 10,200 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues per year, including 4,500 structure fires and 5,700 outside or unclassified fires. These fires caused an annual average of 10 civilian deaths, 160 civilian injuries and $123 million in direct property damage.

Here are some ways you can grill safely this Summer:

1. Keep grill well away from home and deck railings.

2. Open the grill before turning it on.

3. To keep excess gas from leaking out, turn the gas tank off first, then turn off the grill burners.

4. Keep your grill clean.

5. Wear the right clothing.

Grilling Fire Facts

  • July is the peak month for grill fires (17%), including both structure, outdoor or unclassified fires, followed by June (14%), May (13%) and August (12%).
  • In 2013-2017, an average of 19,000 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills.Half (9,300 or 49%) of the injuries were thermal burns, including both burns from fire and from contact with hot objects; 5,200 thermal burns, per year, were caused by such contact or other non-fire events.
  • Children under five accounted for an average of 2,000 or 38%, of the contact-type burns per year. These burns typically occurred when someone, often a child, bumped into, touched or fell on the grill, grill part or hot coals.
  • Gas grills were involved in an average of 8,700 home fires per year, including 3,600 structure fires and 5,100 outdoor fires annually. Leaks or breaks were primarily a problem with gas grills. Eleven percent of gas grill structure fires and 23% of outside gas grill fires were caused by leaks or breaks.
  • Charcoal or other solid-fueled grills were involved in 1,100 home fires per year, including 600 structure fires and 500 outside fires annually.

2018 Halloween Safety Tips

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! Be Safe while out Trick or Treating!

Costume Safety

To help ensure adults and children have a safe holiday, the American Academy of Pediatrics has compiled a list of Halloween safety tips. Before Halloween arrives, be sure to choose a costume that won't cause safety hazards.

  • All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant
  • Avoid masks, which can obstruct vision
  • If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks
  • When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is nontoxic and always test it in a small area first
  • Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation

When They're on the Prowl

  • A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds
  • If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you
  • Agree on a specific time children should return home
  • Teach your children never to enter a stranger's home or car
  • Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends
  • Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home
  • Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don't run, across the street

Safety Tips for Motorists

NSC offers these additional safety tips for parents – and anyone who plans to be on the road during trick-or-treat hours:

  • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully
  • At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing
  • Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween

Fire Prevention Week 2018

10/5/2018 (Permalink)

Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.

This year’s FPW campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere,” works to educate people about three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire––and how to escape safely in the event of one:

LOOK
Look for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.

LISTEN
Listen for the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.

LEARN
Learn two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

Fire Prevention Week 2017

10/9/2017 (Permalink)

“Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”

Fire Prevention Week

According to the National Archives, Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health observance. This year, we would like to share some tips from the National Fire Protection Association for your families' safety. Their campaign this year is "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!"

In a fire, seconds count. Seconds can mean the difference between residents of your community escaping safely from a fire or having their lives end in tragedy. That’s why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme: “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” is so important. It reinforces why everyone needs to have an escape plan.

Here’s this year’s key campaign messages:

  • Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
  • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
  • Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
  • Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
  • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

SERVPRO of Wyoming County/Kingston Township Donates to Local Toys for Tots

1/12/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Wyoming County/Kingston Township was honored to donate to our local Toys for Tots foundation this holiday season.

The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Our goal was to spread holiday cheer to local families in need during the holiday season.

The Toys for Tots foundation works tirelessly each and every holiday season to ensure each child has a special gift to unwrap. We appreciate all they do and SERVPRO of Wyoming County/Kingston Township was happy to donate to the foundation this year!
